The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), a crucial referral center serving five northern Ghana regions, is currently grappling with an oxygen supply disruption caused by a technical malfunction.
On Monday, July 1, 2024, the hospital’s oxygen plant ceased operations due to engine damage, significantly reducing the availability of oxygen at the facility.
According to Mr. Zuberu Alidu, the Public Relations Officer, a team of technical experts is actively working to rectify the issue. However, no specific timeline has been provided for the resolution.
Mr. Alidu reassured the public that the situation is being managed effectively and urged for calm, emphasizing that there is no immediate cause for concern.
He explained, “One of the critical components of the oxygen plant was damaged, preventing it from producing and supplying oxygen. Currently, we are coordinating with suppliers primarily located in Kumasi because our local suppliers in the Northern region are unable to supply us with oxygen.”
“At the moment, we have sufficient supplies. Additionally, we are in constant communication with referring facilities, particularly the Ghana Health Service, to ensure that we can accommodate incoming referrals adequately.”
A medical doctor, speaking anonymously to Channel One TV, disclosed that the hospital has deployed concentrators to help alleviate the oxygen shortage. The staff are optimistic that the issue will be promptly resolved.
