Today, July 4, the National Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will convene to discuss the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s selection of a running mate for the upcoming December 7 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia is set to justify his choice of Energy Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, as the most suitable candidate to be his running mate.
According to Henry Nana Boakye, National Organiser of the NPP, today’s meeting is in accordance with the party’s constitution.
“Article 13 of our party’s constitution mandates that any nominee for the position of running mate must first consult with the National Council. Therefore, Dr. Bawumia will present before the National Council his nomination of the MP for Manhyia South and Minister for Energy, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh,” Nana Boakye stated.
Bawumia held a pivotal meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on June 25 to discuss his selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate. He subsequently formally informed the NPP’s leadership and the Majority Caucus in Parliament.
The nomination of the MP for Manhyia South has generated diverse reactions both within and outside the NPP. While some are commending the choice, others have expressed opposition to his selection.
