The Minority voices concern over detained medical supplies at Tema Port, hinting at potential protests.

Written by on June 20, 2024

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has issued a warning of potential demonstrations if the government does not promptly clear all containers holding essential medical supplies at the Tema Port.

This ultimatum comes after the Health Minister set a two-week deadline for officials to process the consignment donated to Ghana by the Global Fund.

Health Minister Bernard Okoe Boye pledged to personally visit the port and remain until the issue is resolved after the expiration of the two-week ultimatum.

Speaking to reporters, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, urged the government to take immediate action and ensure the clearance of these containers.

“Remember, we previously addressed the issue of the stalled commodities and medications at the port. As members of parliament from the Minority side, we remain steadfast in our commitment to pressuring the government until all these essential commodities and drugs are cleared from the port. This stance is clear and should be noted. Currently, not all containers holding drugs and commodities at the port have been cleared.

“While we acknowledge the plea from the responsible minister for an additional two weeks, it is concerning that such a request is made for commodities that have been held at the port for a year. Nonetheless, we have taken note of the request. However, we want to send a strong signal and warning: within this specified two-week period, every single container — I emphasize, every single one — containing these drugs must be cleared from the port. Not some, as has been the practice.”

He also urged the government to promptly address the concerns of the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union to prevent health workers from seeking better opportunities abroad.
