The Nkawie Circuit Court has remanded 13 individuals accused of illegal mining and unlawful entry into the Jimmirah Forest Reserve in Amangoase, Atwima Mponua District, Ashanti Region.
These individuals are charged with mining within the forest reserve, which is currently part of an afforestation project.
Compartment 18 of the Jimmirah Forest Reserve, managed by the Forest Services Division in Nkawie District, is undergoing afforestation through an agreement with a private developer. However, recent illegal mining activities have disrupted these efforts by targeting the area in search of gold deposits.
Residents of Amangoase, in collaboration with Forestry Commission officers, successfully mobilized to apprehend 13 illegal miners.
The miners have been remanded in police custody and are scheduled to appear in court on August 6, 2024.
