Written by on July 9, 2024

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as NAPO, is poised to be officially unveiled as the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Tuesday, July 9, in a highly anticipated event.

The unveiling ceremony for NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate will be held in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, a stronghold of the NPP. Francis Adomako, the Ashanti Regional Organiser of the NPP, has expressed the region’s enthusiastic anticipation for the event.

On Friday, July 5, the National Council of the NPP formally endorsed NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, a decision that has garnered widespread acclaim from top party officials. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed confidence in the duo’s ability to lead the party to victory in the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh expressed his deep appreciation to Dr. Bawumia for entrusting him with the role of his running mate. NAPO pledged his unwavering commitment to collaborating closely with Dr. Bawumia to secure a decisive victory for the party in the upcoming elections.

The New Patriotic Party has strongly defended NAPO against criticisms of perceived arrogance. In response to the backlash, some stakeholders have recommended that NAPO should consider using prepared scripts for his future public appearances to manage his messaging and prevent potential missteps.

Additionally, the New Patriotic Party has commenced the nomination process for the Manhyia South constituency following Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s elevation to the position of the party’s running mate.

The Manhyia South Parliamentary seat remains vacant pending an official declaration from Parliament.

The New Patriotic Party has assured a transparent electoral process and encouraged prospective aspirants to uphold decorum in their campaigns, stressing that this is an internal matter.

Reports indicate that NAPO’s brother, Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, is also pursuing candidacy for the same parliamentary seat, potentially setting the stage for a familial political rivalry.

Looking ahead, the stage is set for a closely contested presidential election in 2024, with the New Patriotic Party’s ticket of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) squaring off against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) team, led by former President John Dramani Mahama and Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
