The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has affirmed its readiness to conduct the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), despite outstanding debts from the government.
Scheduled from Monday, July 8 to July 15, this year’s BECE will take place across all examination centers in the country. Despite concerns among stakeholders about WAEC’s ability to proceed with the 2024 BECE due to unpaid debts, WAEC reassured the public during a press conference in Accra on Friday that it is fully prepared to administer the exams for 569,095 candidates from 19,506 schools.
John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, clarified in an interview with Citi News that the government had paid GH55.8 million of the total owed amount as of Thursday, July 4. This payment is deemed sufficient to facilitate the examination process.
“We can assure everyone that as of July 4th, we had already deployed our staff to various examination centers to set up and organize the examinations. Therefore, we confidently affirm that the exams will proceed as scheduled.
“So far, we have received approximately GH55.8 million from the government, which is sufficient for us to successfully conduct the examination. At present, this amount pertains specifically to the BECE.
“We have adequate funds to administer the examination. Additionally, plans are well underway for the disbursement of further funds to facilitate the entire process, including the release of results,” he stated.
