Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President, announced that significant progress has been made in procuring and importing 100 electric buses into Ghana by the year’s end.
The initiative aims to combat climate change by reducing carbon emissions and addressing the escalating costs of transportation. Dr. Bawumia disclosed these plans during a meeting with members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), highlighting that the introduction of electric buses will involve a public-private partnership.
He also outlined the government’s intentions to establish charging stations at various fueling stations to support the new bus fleet upon its arrival.
We are addressing the issue of reducing transportation costs in Ghana through two main strategies: transitioning towards electric vehicles, which benefit the environment and are unaffected by fuel price fluctuations. Electric vehicles also require fewer spare parts, mainly batteries, which have a long lifespan, further reducing operational costs.
“Starting this month, we will begin constructing charging stations necessary for electric vehicle operations. These stations will be strategically located at fueling stations across the country. Our goal is for Ghana to embrace solar power, and these charging stations will be hybrid, utilizing both solar and conventional electricity sources. Our aim is to advance significantly in this direction by year’s end. We plan to introduce approximately 100 electric buses this year to demonstrate the effectiveness of these initiatives.”
