NDC Urges Akufo-Addo to Halt Further Appointments to Superior Courts

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to refrain from making additional appointments to the country’s superior courts.
This call comes in response to Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s recommendation of five judges for nomination to the Supreme Court.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the NDC, stated that President Akufo-Addo has already appointed numerous loyalists of the NPP to the courts, suggesting that further nominations are unnecessary.
He emphasized that the current bench of judges is sufficient to handle judicial matters
“Mr. Kwetey further emphasized that it would be equitable to leave any such appointments, which hold significant implications for the country’s democracy, to the next president.
“With general elections scheduled in a few months, we believe President Akufo-Addo should immediately suspend any plans for further appointments to the superior courts. This is because he has already filled the courts with a considerable number of his loyalists, to the concern of many conscientious Ghanaians and committed democrats.
“Furthermore, there are currently an adequate number of judges on the bench to handle judicial matters. Given the upcoming elections, it is reasonable that any appointment affecting constitutional democracy be deferred to the next President of Ghana,” he asserted.
