Accra, Ghana’s Bustling Capital, Faces Intensified Congestion by 2030 – GSS

Written by on July 4, 2024

Recent data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) suggests that Accra, the vibrant capital city of Ghana, is poised to experience heightened congestion by 2030, driven by significant population growth.

The GSS’s latest population projections for 2021 to 2050 reveal a marked increase in population across the Greater Accra region.

As of 2024, Ghana’s total projected population surpasses 33 million, up from 30.8 million in 2021.

The Greater Accra Region is expected to accommodate a growing number of school-aged children, projected to reach 2.96 million by 2030.

Additionally, the youth population aged 15 to 24 years is expected to nearly double in size.

Dr. Faustina Frempong, Deputy Government Statistician, who presented the data, cautioned the government to address the exponential population growth in the Greater Accra region, given its limited land space.

The population projections aim to provide foresight into future demographic trends, informing policymakers, researchers, and the public about anticipated changes.

According to the GSS, this information is crucial for monitoring the progress of national, continental, and global development objectives.
