The Minority abstains from vetting Deputy Trade Minister-designate.

Written by on July 2, 2024

Members of the Minority Caucus on the Appointments Committee of Parliament have opted out of participating in the vetting of the Deputy Minister-designate for Trade and Industry.

Kofi Ahenkorah-Marfo, the Deputy Trade and Industry Minister-designate, was scheduled for vetting today, July 2. However, a press release signed by Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson stated that he and his colleagues would not attend the proceedings.

The Minority cited current economic challenges as their reason for abstaining from the vetting process. They also pointed to the relocation of international companies from Ghana as evidence that the government should reduce its size rather than increase it.

We are unable to support President Akufo-Addo’s nomination at this time due to the severe economic challenges facing our country, including crippling economic crises, food insecurity, debt defaults from excessive borrowing, government corruption, and wasteful expenditures.

“Ordinary Ghanaians are enduring significant hardships, while businesses relocate from Ghana due to the high tax regime implemented by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration. One would expect the President to reduce the size of his already expansive government in response to these economic realities. Such a move would demonstrate sensitivity to the people’s plight and a commitment to restoring confidence in the economy.

“The Minority members emphasized, ‘We cannot support a decision that further burdens suffering Ghanaians, particularly when the President disregards the financial implications of maintaining an oversized government.
