Plastic manufacturers to protest on July 10 against 5% excise tax”

Written by on July 2, 2024

The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) has announced plans to protest on Wednesday, July 10, against the newly imposed 5% excise tax on locally produced plastic products.

Representing local industry players, the Association issued a formal request to the government on June 27, demanding the immediate suspension of the tax. They have warned that if their demands are not met, they will halt production for seven days to express their discontent.

Speaking at a press conference, the President of the Association, Ebbo Botwe, emphasized the urgency for the government to reconsider its position. He called for renewed engagement with all stakeholders to prevent the potential economic fallout from the planned production shutdown.

Despite these demands, the government has not addressed the Association’s concerns, prompting the upcoming demonstration.

In a statement dated Monday, July 1, the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) announced a protest in collaboration with the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers and the Plastic Sellers Association of Ghana.

The protest is set to begin at the Obra Spot in Circle, proceed through the Accra Technical University, and conclude at the Ministry of Finance, with over 400 participants expected.

The Association is urging all members to participate in the demonstration to ensure their concerns are addressed.
