The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has strongly condemned the desecration of a deceased body by some youths in Asante Akyem.
The agency expressed deep concern over the lack of respect and dignity shown in recent incidents of desecration across the country, with the latest incident occurring in Asante Akyem.
A circulating video on social media depicts the inappropriate handling of a deceased person during funeral rites.
MoFFA urged the public to refrain from such deplorable acts, emphasizing that they violate Section 285 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960, Act 29.
“The Agency is dismayed by a video circulating on social media showing some youth in Asante Akyem engaging in the inappropriate handling of a deceased person during funeral rites, as well as similar incidents in various parts of the country recently. We are deeply saddened by the lack of respect and dignity shown towards the deceased.
“We unequivocally condemn such despicable acts, as they undermine the solemnity and dignity that should be upheld during funeral ceremonies. We strongly urge the public to refrain from such practices, as they contravene public health principles and pose risks to public health and safety.”
MoFFA quoted Section 285 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, which states: “A person who unlawfully hinders the burial of the dead body of a person or without lawful authority dissects or harms the dead body of a person, or being under a duty to cause the dead body of a person to be buried, fails to perform that duty commits a misdemeanour punishable by a fine or imprisonment.”
