Election 2024: Bagbin Urges Government to Learn from Kenya’s Unrest

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has warned that recent events in Kenya must serve as a wake-up call to Ghanaian leaders, especially as the country prepares for a crucial election on December 7.
The Speaker noted that the situation in Kenya is not too different from Ghana’s and urged leaders, including Members of Parliament, to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.
Mr. Bagbin said he has reached out to key stakeholders, including the chairpersons of the Electoral Commission and the National Commission for Civic Education, traditional authorities, and the Chief Justice, and will engage with President Akufo-Addo as part of efforts to ensure a violence-free electoral process.
Speaking during an engagement with journalists in Kumasi, Bagbin emphasized the need for preemptive measures to safeguard Ghana’s democracy ahead of the 2024 elections.
“People often take many things for granted, including my colleagues in Parliament. We can all witness that what occurred in Kenya has now surfaced in Tanzania, and it could potentially happen in Ghana, although I’m not suggesting it will.
“We are not fundamentally different from our brothers and sisters in Kenya, so we must take preemptive measures to prevent such occurrences. We must ensure that the person Ghanaians choose to lead the country is duly elected. In this regard, I will ensure that my actions are free from any partisan influence.”
