The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has paved the way to endorse Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, as the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the December 7 elections. This endorsement follows thorough consultations by the flagbearer, with Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s acceptance affirmed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the NPP Majority in Parliament.
Ahead of presenting his running mate to the party’s National Council, Dr. Bawumia met with Dr. Opoku Prempeh and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, on Sunday evening. The meeting aimed to reconcile any differences and strategize for the way forward.
Speaking to Citi FM, Mr. Afenyo-Markin said the party’s National Council would soon convene to finalize the decision.
“Yes, our party leader and flagbearer met extensively with the leadership of Parliament to discuss our party’s strategy leading into the 2024 elections.
“The outcome of the discussion is that our esteemed colleague, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, is his choice for running mate. This is our customary practice, and out of respect, the caucus needed to be informed and consulted on this decision,” he stated.
He continued, “Subsequently, I engaged with the caucus, and the feedback has been largely positive. The majority of caucus members support his decision. However, for it to be officially confirmed, we await the National Council meeting.
“Based on the discussions, it seems there will be consensus, and we anticipate no issues. We also inquired about the President’s perspective, which was also very positive.”
“So, all the necessary organs have been briefed and everything is in place for our colleague, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to join him in carrying the party’s flag for the 2024 elections.”
