Walewale: NPP youth maintain vigil at police station to safeguard ballot boxes.

Written by on June 27, 2024

A group of youth affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) maintained a vigil at the Walewale Police Station on Wednesday to safeguard ballot boxes containing votes from the constituency’s primary held on January 27, 2024.

During the primary, incumbent Member of Parliament for Walewale, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, was defeated by 35-year-old Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru. Dr. Kabiru received 345 votes, surpassing Hajia Zuweira who garnered 338 votes.

Following her dissatisfaction with the results, Hajia Zuweira contested the outcome in the High Court in Tamale.

The youth on vigil claimed that the NPP’s North East Regional Chairman and Hajia Zuweira were conspiring to remove the ballot boxes from the police station without following the proper procedures.

On Monday, June 24, the High Court in Tamale issued an injunction against Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, preventing him from assuming the position of the elected NPP parliamentary candidate for Walewale.
