NAPO is not my preferred candidate to partner Bawumia – Appiah-Kubi

Written by on June 27, 2024

Andy Appiah-Kubi, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North and a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his disapproval of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) being chosen as the party’s running mate.

Appiah-Kubi acknowledges that while the Energy Minister is a qualified candidate to partner with flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December elections, he is not his preferred choice.

On Wednesday, June 27, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the ruling party’s flagbearer, presented Dr. Opoku Prempeh to President Akufo-Addo for approval.

Nevertheless, Appiah-Kubi stated that if it were up to him, he would not select NAPO as the running mate for the NPP in the general elections.

“I wouldn’t speak for the majority because we have not been consulted as a caucus to state our position. But as for me, Appiah-Kubi, you can ask my opinion on this matter. If it were up to me, I wouldn’t choose him. He is not my preference. ‘Appiah-Kubi is saying that he is not my preference,’ but that doesn’t mean he is not qualified,” he told Joy News in an interview.

He added that he would probably select someone more acceptable to parliamentarians, noting that the party should find someone who, if the presidential candidate is unavailable, would support a Member of Parliament and campaign in that member’s constituency.

“I would want someone who would be open with the people on the ground, who would be able to deliver the votes, who would submit to the presidency, and who would be important in bringing Parliament closer to the executive.

I don’t see that happening in this equation. He cannot support me, so why would I say that I prefer him? He cannot support me,” he stated.
