The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has announced that the ministry is actively pursuing amendments to the Chieftaincy Act aimed at empowering traditional leaders to adjudicate minor disputes within their communities.
Section 63(D) of the Act, which currently prohibits traditional authorities from resolving disputes within their jurisdictions, is under scrutiny in the Supreme Court, limiting their traditional role.
Addressing attendees at the royal conference organized by the Church of Pentecost in Gomoa Fetteh, Central Region, Stephen Asamoah Boateng underscored the significance of upholding and strengthening the institution of Chieftaincy.
“The government recognizes your invaluable role in shaping the ethical foundation of numerous generations in our country.
“Nananom, you perform invaluable services for the government, and in our discussions, we are in the process of amending the Chieftaincy Law. Specifically, we aim to grant clear authority to Nananom to resolve minor disputes within your communities.
“While Section 62(D) of the Act already addresses this, it has faced legal challenges in the Supreme Court. We recognize the need for amendments that will restore and refine this authority for Nananom,” he stated.
The minister also emphasized his ministry’s commitment to establishing the Chieftaincy Development Funds, aimed at providing allowances to traditional authorities to support their governance efforts.
“In addition, we are committed to ensuring adequate resourcing for Nananom. As custodians of our traditions and community affairs, it is only fair that resources are allocated to support your responsibilities on behalf of the people.
“We are proposing a Chieftaincy Development Fund akin to the National District Assembly Common Fund. Additionally, we are considering providing living allowances—distinct from statutory sitting allowances—adjustable based on exchange rates and living conditions. This ensures Nananom can comfortably fulfill their administrative roles on behalf of the nation.
