Obama’s half-sister affected by tear gas in Kenya protests.

Written by on June 26, 2024

Kenyan activist Auma Obama, the half-sister of former U.S. President Barack Obama, was among the protesters affected by tear gas on Tuesday during demonstrations outside the parliament building in Nairobi, as shown in a CNN interview.

Police fired on demonstrators attempting to breach Kenya’s legislature, resulting in at least five protesters killed, dozens wounded, and parts of the parliament building set on fire as lawmakers inside passed legislation to increase taxes.

In the chaos, Auma Obama was interviewed by a CNN reporter and asked about her presence at the protests.

“I’m here because—look at what’s happening. Young Kenyans are out here demonstrating for their rights. They’re waving flags and banners. I can hardly see anymore,” she said, coughing and shielding her eyes from the spreading smoke.

“We’re being tear-gassed.”

Behind her, a man held a sign stating, “Colonialism never ended in Kenya,” while another protester shouted, “This is our country. This is our nation.”

Auma Obama had earlier shared photos of herself on Twitter from the protest.

The office of former President Obama stated that it had no immediate comment on the incident involving Auma Obama or the violence in Kenya.
