Dr. Atuahene highlights that men are more likely to transmit HIV to women

Written by on June 21, 2024

Dr. Steve Kyeremeh Atuahene, Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, has underscored the heightened vulnerability of females to HIV infections compared to males.

The 2023 data on new HIV infections shows a higher incidence among females compared to males.

In an interview with Joy News on Friday, June 21, Dr. Atuahene explained the reasons behind this trend: “When a female has intercourse with a man and he ejaculates, the sperm containing HIV particles may remain in her body for a significant period. Additionally, the vagina has a larger surface area and more fragile mucous membranes compared to the male genitalia.”

Dr. Atuahene highlighted the protective role of male circumcision in Ghana against HIV transmission and emphasized the need for women to protect themselves: “Women should be aware of their heightened vulnerability and take necessary precautions.”

He stressed the importance of this understanding globally: “This fundamental awareness should be common knowledge among Ghanaians and all people worldwide.”

Dr. Atuahene pointed out the lower transmission rate from woman to man (about 2%) compared to from man to woman (more than 12%), cautioning against risky behaviors: “Women should not jeopardize their health and lives by accepting money for unprotected sex, especially if they have untreated sexually transmitted infections that increase their risk of HIV.”

Regarding specific groups at higher risk, Dr. Atuahene mentioned tailored programs: “Special programs are in place for sex workers, men who have sex with men, and now including those who inject drugs and other high-risk men. Despite financial challenges, these groups receive dedicated attention, including access to condoms, testing, and linkage to healthcare services for diagnosis and treatment.”
