ormer football legend turned broadcaster Gary Neville praised Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey for his prowess as a defensive midfielder while analyzing England’s disappointing performance against Denmark.
England managed only a 1-1 draw against Denmark in their second game at the ongoing 2024 Euros, sparking widespread criticism from fans.
During his post-game analysis on ITV, Neville pointed out England’s struggles to generate opportunities from deep positions on the field. He highlighted that Declan Rice doesn’t perform as effectively in the defensive midfield role compared to his Arsenal counterparts Thomas Partey and Jorginho.
“I want to mention a player who we all love 100 percent. Mikel Arteta moved Declan Rice out of that number six position for the last 15 games of the season to bring in Jorginho and Thomas Partey, because he’s not that good at playing there.”
Partey is entering the last season of the five-year contract he signed when he moved to Arsenal from Atletico Madrid. He also led Ghana’s Black Stars to victories over Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
England have four points in the competition after beating Serbia 1-0 and drawing with Denmark ahead of its last game against Slovenia.
