Soldiers deployed to a galamsey area in Bole, Savannah Region, are alleged to have brutalized Yakubu Mahama, the vice regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The soldiers were reportedly sent to protect Chinese nationals engaging in illegal mining in the area.
A confrontation ensued between the soldiers and the Savannah Vice NPP Regional Chairman, who allegedly requested to speak with the team leader.
According to reports, the confrontation escalated, prompting the Vice NPP Regional Chairman’s brother to contact the NPP Secretary for Bole-Bamboi. He arrived at the Bole Police Station with a group of young men, which reportedly worsened the situation.
The soldiers reportedly responded with gunfire and physically assaulted the NPP Regional Chairman in the process.
The Vice Chairman’s brother sternly warned the soldiers that such behavior would not be tolerated.
