KATH initiates NHIA’s complimentary dialysis program.

Written by on June 12, 2024

Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has commenced the implementation of the National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) policy to cover dialysis expenses for kidney patients aged below 18 and above 60 years.

So far, eight patients have availed themselves of this initiative, and the hospital’s administration has assured that those who previously paid for the services will be refunded.

According to the hospital’s management, only 20% of end-stage renal disease patients could afford the twice-weekly dialysis sessions previously. However, with the NHIA’s intervention, they anticipate that the remaining 80% will now be able to access the necessary treatment.

Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, CEO of the NHIA, visited the hospital to oversee the implementation of the policy, affirming the government’s commitment to its effective rollout.

He assured that the NHIA would reimburse the cost of dialysis upon submission of claims by hospitals.

“We are here today in the Ashanti Region to monitor the implementation. As I mentioned in our previous meeting with CEOs, we collectively decided based on available resources. The NHIA has funds allocated for this purpose, and we will reimburse hospitals once they submit their claims to us.”

Dr. Aboagye emphasized that the government has a comprehensive plan not only for kidney disease but also for chronic diseases.

“The government has a comprehensive plan in place not only for kidney diseases but also for chronic diseases. I’m confident that it will be unveiled soon as part of the government’s overarching agenda.”

The hospital’s Deputy Medical Director, Dr. Yaw Opare Larbi, affirmed the implementation, stating that patients who paid for dialysis treatment starting from June 1 will be refunded.

“We convened a meeting with stakeholders in the hospital, and immediately after our discussion on Friday, the team sprang into action, rolling out the initiative. We began utilizing the forms provided by the NHIA.”
