Malawi vice president Chilima and nine others killed in plane crash

The wreckage of a plane carrying Malawi’s vice-president has been discovered with no survivors, President Lazarus Chakwera confirmed today. Saulos Chilima and nine others were en route within the country on Monday morning when their aircraft vanished from airport radars.

The military plane was navigating through adverse weather conditions. Soldiers conducted an exhaustive search overnight and into the morning in Chikangawa Forest. During a news briefing on Tuesday, President Chakwera announced that the Malawi Defence Force commander informed him of the completion of the search and rescue mission, with the aircraft located.

Mr. Chakwera expressed deep sorrow and condolences to the people of Malawi. He reported that the rescue team found the aircraft severely damaged. The vice-president, known for his dedication and service, was on his way to attend the burial of former government minister Ralph Kasambara. Former First Lady Shanil Dzimbiri was also among the passengers.

The flight, originating from Lilongwe and bound for Mzuzu, was diverted back due to poor visibility.”
